The National Library of Portugal describes their manuscript collections (nearly 52.000) in the folllowing terms: "This part of our patrimonial holdings consists of six collections of manuscripts which each consist of library items and, in lesser numbers, archival deposits. These collectiosn total 15.066 codices and ca. 36.000 archival documents, of diffrent genres and provenances, from the 12th to the 20th centuries." (Esta Área reúne actualmente seis Colecções de Manuscritos, constituídas por documentos de biblioteca e, em menor número, por espécies de arquivo, num total de cerca de 15 066 códices e cerca de 36 000 manuscritos avulsos, de diversos géneros, tipologias e proveniências, cujos limites cronológicos se situam entre os séculos XII e XX, e abarcando todos os ramos do saber.)
